ADIEU NELSON MANDELA

The former South African president had a profound impact on the course of human history.

He was an icon, an inspiration, and proof that one individual can have a profound impact on the course of history. And now he has moved on from the world he helped change. Nelson Mandela has passed away at age 95.

The former South African president, who spent 27 years as a political prisoner before assuming the nation’s highest office, had been hospitalized in recent months for a lung infection.

Born in 1918, Mandela gained worldwide fame as a prominent activist against apartheid, the system of racial segregation that kept his homeland divided. Though he was sentenced to life in prison in 1964, an international campaign of support helped him gain his freedom in 1990. Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his work to end apartheid, and was elected the country’s first black president in 1994. Considered the father of democracy in South Africa, Mandela is a symbol of freedom, and of courage, grace and dignity in the face of oppression, all across the globe.

While Mandela the man will be missed, his legacy will live on through countless generations. Tell us what Nelson Mandela meant to you, and pay your respects to the man who showed the world that one person’s efforts can make a global difference.
